ALDO LONDI
(1911-2003)
Italian Painter, Sculptor and Ceramist
Aldo Londi was born in Montelupo Fiorentino, just outside of Florence, an area that has been known for its pottery since the Renaissance. Londi started working for a ceramics manufacturer when he was 11 years old. After being taken prisoner in South Africa during WW2, he returned to Italy and in 1946 was appointed artistic director at Bitossi family ceramics studio in Montelupo. By Londi’s new style, Bitossi production had a sudden transformation. The style of Londi promoted the production of new high quality objects realized by handcraft methods. He held that position for over 50 years, and created thousand of designs for vases, jugs, animals, candle stick holders and other objects.
